The red lip can either be a complete hit or miss in the make up world. I believe it adds style and zest to any look and for me there is something so sexy and classic about a woman with beautiful red lips. However, there is nothing worse than a woman who doesn’t know how to apply lipstick properly and then attempts the red lip. It can also go completely wrong when wearing the wrong shade of red for your skin tone. Below are my top tips for obtaining the ultimate red lip:
Make sure you apply a good lip balm to moisturise your lips before application. You want to avoid dry, cracked lips and by creating a smooth surface it ensures your lipstick will go on evenly. My go-to product is Luca’s Papaw Ointment, and what’s even better is they have just launched a special lip applicator version.
When selecting your shade of red, make sure you take your hair colour and skin tone into consideration. I have personally found that as a blonde with olive skin my best shade of red is a bright one with an orange undertone. I find that brunettes can pull off the more ruby shades better. My favourite red lipstick is Lady Danger from Mac. Other classics include Brave Red or Ruby Roo, both also from Mac.
Stay in the lines! Just because you want to look like you have bigger lips doesn’t mean we will believe you if you apply your lipstick over your lips. Please ladies, this for me is my number one rule!
- Lip liner
If you do wish to define your lip more, the best way to do this would be with a lip liner. I would suggest going one shade darker than your lipstick for optimal results. The one featured here is MAC Cherry Lip Pencil.
I apply my lipstick to my top lip first, usually starting with the right section and then moving on to the left, I finish with filling in my bottom lip. Then instead of rubbing your lips together (as our Mom’s and Granny’s taught us to do) just do a slight dabbing motion by quickly pressing your lips together.
To ensure maxim wear from your first application avoid putting glass over, then tends to shorted the wear as it rubs off much easier. I prefer a matte look red lip as opposed to a glossy one as for me I think it just looks too much.
